Commas and interrupting elements
Use commas to set off words, phrases and clauses when the break the flow of a sentence from subject to verb to object or complement.
The patient, I believe, has already been tried on Diovan.
She has, on multiple occasions, been referred to a cardiologist.
The patient has been advised to follow up with me in the office or, if he cannot get to the office, by phone.
Many sentences can be recast and the commas eliminated.
