Hyphenating number ranges
Expressing Dimensions
When expressing ranges or dimensions used as modifiers, use hyphens and spacing according to the same guidelines as non-number modifiers.
in a 10- to 14-day period
a 3x4-cm strip
given in a 5-, 10- or 15-mg dose
a 5-mm-diameter scope
According to the AHDI Book of Style 3rd Ed., compound modifiers are not hyphenated if the unit of measure is an abbreviated metric unit, where neither the numeric value nor the unit of measure constitutes an actual word with which a compound can be formed.
3 cm incision
5 mg dose
3 x 1 x 1 cm tumor
However, section 18.3.7 of the AMA Style Guide specifies that a hyphen is used to join a unit of measure and the number associated with it when the combination is used as an adjective. Section 8.3.1 gives a specific example using a hyphen with metric measurements and dosages.
an 8-L container
a 10-mm strip
