Using colons in references

References to books or publications

Use a colon followed by a space to separate the title and subtitle of a book or other publication.

Dr. Smith's biography was extensively covered in the article Doctors on the Mend: Physicians Dealing with Personal Crises.

The speaker is the author of Healthcare in the 21st Century: A New Model of Care.

Cross References and footnotes

A colon may be used to separate volume number and page number in footnotes and similar references. Leave no space before or after the colon.
