Writing numbers as roman numerals

The above table illustrates a very easy-to-follow system for roman numerals. When a roman numeral precedes another of greater value, it diminishes the value of the following letter. A bar over the roman numeral indicates the value is 1000 times greater, as shown on the chart above. (Roman numerals will not be reviewed in detail - these are taught in elementary school. It's unlikely you'll be adding and subtracting them - a basic understanding is all that's necessary.)

Grades and Classifications

Use roman numerals for cancer stages and arabic numerals for cancer grades.

Other common uses in medical documentation include (but are not limited to):

• human chromosome terminology
• cranial nerve terminology
